Terms You Need To Know
- Jabber ID: your login and what you give out to contacts. Looks like socool@example.com or for links written as xmpp:socool@example.com
- Cheogram: a family of services for connecting open communication networks
- Cheogram Android: an app used to access Cheogram services using a Jabber ID
- JMP: a plugin for Cheogram to get your own phone number and communicate with regular phone numbers, analogous to a phone service
- Snikket: a provider of Jabber IDs, the one you get automatically if you choose JMP when signing up with. Cheogram Android
- MBOA: the company behind JMP
Terms You DO NOT Need To Know
These terms you may see come up during technical discussions. They are either jargon or describe technical aspects of the system relevant to developers. They are documented for curiosity sake but you shouldn't worry if you don't know what they are for.
- XMPP: the protocol used for computers to talk to each other on the Jabber network
- Sopranica: the open source project that develops Cheogram, JMP, etc
- MUC: another word for chatroom or channel
- MMS, SMS, PSTN: parts of the phone network
- Gateway: a way to communicate with one protocol from another
- Bridge: a way to copy messages from entities on one protocol to entities on another (Cheogram services are mostly gateways not bridges)
